How to Repair Your Credit Score

If you have bad credit, there is no easy way to repair it, but luckily, there are solutions and resources available to help you. When you have outrageous bills to pay, it can be extremely frustrating, but there is no shame in asking for help to get your credit back on track.

The first thing you need to do when trying to repair your credit is to request copies of all three of your credit histories. The laws are changing all the time that are making it harder to pull yourself out of debt, so it is important to know where your credit is at. You are allowed to get a free copy of your credit report once a year. Once you have obtained your credit history, look for fraudulent charges that you did not approve. If you find any such charges dispute them immediately. Once you file a dispute to the three credit bureaus, Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax, they are required to do an investigation. You should not have to pay for a charge that you did not incur. All three credit bureaus have a dispute hot-line available, and that is the quickest way to get unapproved charges off your account.

The majority of the information on your credit reports will be from banks, credit card companies, utility providers, judgments, and so on. Delinquent account information generally stays on your credit report for at least seven years; whereas positive account information usually stays on your report for around ten years. Tax liens often stay on your credit report for around 15 years, and bankruptcies often stay on your credit report for ten years.

Once you have looked over your credit report, and you see the debts that are your responsibility, it is time to start getting them paid off. This is when it will benefit you to start researching your options. If you believe credit repair companies can actually remove items from your credit report and lower your monthly bills, then you have not been openly informed. Even though most of these companies are regulated by the government, the ones that aren’t are not under any obligation to follow the laws. If you feel you need outside help to repair your credit, these types of companies aren’t not the place to go.

A good place to go if you are seeking credit counseling is the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. The representatives there are highly trained in helping consumers find a solution to eliminate debt. They will also help you make payment arrangements with your creditors.

Even though eliminating debt is difficult, it is not impossible. Millions of people around the world will have to deal with debt at one time or another in their life, so remember that you are not alone. The Consumer Response Center is a great source if you need to find information about your rights. If you are a victim of identity thief, remember that you do have rights. When you know what options are available to you, you can make the choice that is best for you.
