Build a Good Credit Foundation

It is imperative in today’s society that you keep and maintain a good credit score. Your credit score will determine your creditability and financial stability when applying for employment, renting an apartment, opening a bank account, or even opening an account with your telephone company. Good credit used to only be important if you were going to buy a home or a car, but this is just not the case anymore. Uncontrolled spending habits are just not worth risking your future financial situation.

When your credit is in trouble, the first thing you should do is request copies of your credit scores in writing. You are entitled by federal law to receive a free annual credit report. You need to obtain your credit information from three credit bureaus, whose information can be found on the internet or in a phone book. If you have already received a credit report for that year, you may also use any letter of credit denial within 60 days of its receipt with your written request. Be sure to include a copy of your state issued identification, proof of your current address, and your last known addresses for the past five years. It is also very important to include a copy of your social security card with your request.

It is important to remember that your credit history is basically an open book. Any creditor where you apply for a loan can access your credit history. What your credit history entails can determine if you get approved for a loan or not. Your credit history works like a blue print and lets a creditor know how dependable you are going to be when paying your debt. Your credit history tells creditors if you are financially stable and will be able to make the agreed upon payments. Getting approved for a loan is not personal. You might be a good, honest person who wasn’t able to pay their bills, but most creditors do not know you on a personal basis, so a credit history is the best way to sum up your credentials in a short amount of time.

If your reputation is being damaged because of bad credit, the time to fix your credit is now. Even if you are on a limited income, you still have options, and repairing your credit is a possibility. Once you have received your credit reports, contact your creditors, let them know of your good intentions, work out a payment plan with them, and then make your monthly payments on time and in full. Paying any amount of money is better than paying nothing. Any effort you can make that shows your creditor you mean business is going to help repair your financial reputation.

If you’re at a loss at where to begin repairing your credit, there are a plethora of resources just waiting to help you. The internet and public library are great places to go that have limitless information on credit repair. Some credit repair agencies offer free credit repair services, so take advantage of them. Having good credit is more than just being able to be approved for large loans; it improves your reputation and self esteem. Repairing your bad credit is vital to establishing good working relationships with businesses and potential creditors.
