Repairing Credit by Contacting Creditors

When you are in debt there are several avenues you can take to start repairing your credit. One such avenue is to contact your creditors and try to arrange payment plans such as extending your due date, or lowering your monthly payments. Other possible avenues for repairing your credit will be explored in the following article. Keep in mind that the avenue that is best for you is the one that is easiest for you to follow and maintain.

If you’re a student burdened with student loans, you can apply for a deference from your loan officer. This will only temporarily suspend your payments, and the interest will still accumulate. A deference can last from around six months to a couple of years, but then your monthly payments will pick back up. If you are turned down for a deference, you can apply for forbearance, which will temporarily postpone your monthly payments. If you’ve been turned down for a deference and forbearance, you can try consolidating your student loans. It is also possible to refinance your student loans, which can lower your monthly payments. If your credit is severely damaged, though, you might have a hard time getting approved for a loan. Another payment option for students is flex pay. If you have a FFELP Stafford Loan you can ask for an extension on your loan, or a renewal on your loan that will determine your monthly payments bases on your current income. There are a lot of options for students when it comes to paying off their student loans. The only thing you shouldn’t do is ignore your debt.

If you have a good history and have paid your bills on time in the past, but have run into financial difficulty, you could possibly get a default. You need to have made payments on time for six consecutive months in order to qualify for a default. A default does not excuse you from your debt, but it will allow you to make payments according to your current financial situation. It is not possible to get approved for a second default, so be sure to take advantage of the one you have and pay your bills on time. Once you have faithfully paid your default for a year, you can usually have it dropped, but the downside is that in the long run your payments will increase.

If you’re under the financial burden of doctor, dental, or lawyer bills, there are several avenues you can pursue to get these debts paid off. The first thing you should always do is try to negotiate with your creditor and work out a payment plan. Most of these offices will be willing to lower monthly payments, or remove late fees and charges. This is a great way to keep your account from going to a collection agency. The moment you realize you will not be able to make your payments, contact your creditors to let them know about your upcoming situation. As soon as they realize your good intentions, they will probably be more then willing to work with you.

If you have a car loan and realize that you are not going to be able to make the monthly installments, contact your creditor immediately. You can ask for an extension or a lower monthly payment, and after hearing about your situation, most creditors will comply. No matter what you do never lie to your creditor, any creditor. This will only make matters worse, and if they find out about your dishonesty, the may reverse their payment plan. However, most creditors will reward your honesty and attempts to pay your bills on time and in full.

It is very common to get charges on your bills that are incorrect. As soon as you realize there was an error in computing your bill, dispute the charges immediately. Keep all your records in a safe place that you can get to quickly if you need to. Keeping track of your financial obligations is one of the best and easiest ways to protect your credit. Never feel daunted when trying to tackle your credit problems. There are too many solutions to repair your credit to get discouraged. If you always try to do your best, you will be rewarded for your good intentions.
